Costing nothing is the whole appeal of a spreadsheet, and that is worth taking seriously. The real cost is the hours someone spends chasing status by hand, and the feedback that never reaches a decision because it stayed in an inbox.

Why this bites harder on hardware

A software beta running on a spreadsheet still has crash reports and usage data underneath it. Those arrive whether or not anyone fills in the sheet, so the spreadsheet only has to organize data you already get.

A hardware beta has none of that. If a tester does not tell you the hub dropped off the network on day three, nothing else will. What testers tell you is the main signal, not an extra. So the most important fact in the program is which testers answered and which went quiet, and a spreadsheet is exactly where that fact hides.

The second problem is doing it again. Devices ship in versions. If the program cannot be copied forward, every version starts from a blank sheet, the test plan quietly drifts, and two rounds of results stop being comparable.
